Securing your home & garden
Insert security devices
There are numerous devices that you can relatively easily set up in your home to alert you to burglars trying to break in, to make it appear as though you are still there or to prevent them from entering at all.
Here are some precautions that you may like to consider before leaving on holiday:
- A simple security timer can make it look as though there are people still living in your house even when you are away as lights are still switched on and off and the expected times.
- Good lighting will more often than not deter a thief.
- Inserting lights, which are activated by movement, can be especially effective. A simple garden light can be converted into a security light and you won't be aware of any change to your garden apart from the fact that you'll be able to see your way when you come home at night.
- Sensors can be purchased separately to convert a normal light into a security one.
- Timer can be used to switch on and off radios, lights and TV's whilst you are away tricking the burglar into believing that you are actually in
- Burglar alarms are obviously one of the most effective ways of deterring criminals from your home. This is especially true if they are visible because it will make them think twice about actually activating it.
- There is a huge variety of alarms available ranging from high tech alarms to simpler and less expensive DIY alarms. There are now an even wire free alarms that make the process of installing one considerably less complicated!
- Consider attaching a small cage around the inside of the letter box to prevent small hands from being able to reach any of the locks on the inside of the door. Thieves will also use techniques such as a magnet on the end of a fishing rod to get keys through a letterbox.
- Door viewers can help you to identify any unexpected callers before you open the door.
