Increasing the number of courses designed to teach better road skills could help to reduce insurance premiums.
In particular, speed awareness courses which offer an alternative to points on driving licences are being welcomed by the insurance industry.
A number of police forces throughout the UK, including Lancashire, Thames Valley and Avon and Somerset, already offering the courses which help to stop drivers from re-offending and the initiative is likely to be adopted across the country.
"Any measure therefore that can decrease the risk of repeat offending will keep some of these drivers on the road and importantly will show them where they were making mistakes before," said Tony Allen, chief executive of the A & A Group.
"The idea that drivers may now have the option to take part in a speed awareness course means
intermediaries such as ourselves would be willing to take such a course into consideration as a further means of reducing their premium."
