Drivers are being warned not to keep vital vehicle documentation in their car in order to avoid the possibility of identity theft.
Research by Capital One discovered that 11 per cent of motorists leave their car insurance documents in their glove boxes on a regular basis.
A total of 12 per cent of motorists involved in the study admitted they left their MOT certificate in their car and eight per cent left their vehicle registration documents.
"Many identity theft cases are the result of an opportunistic crime, and so are just as likely to come about through a bag snatch or a vehicle break-in as they are from a house burglary or by bin raiding," said Ian Cobley, of Capital One.
"People should take particular care not to leave valuable documents unattended at work and in the car."
