Nearly one-third of drivers have found it so difficult to park in city-centres that they have gone home instead, according to the RAC Foundation.
Research estimates that 80 per cent of traffic in city centres is made up of motorists simply looking for somewhere to park. There is also evidence that parking congestion is spreading into more suburban areas, with 20 per cent of drivers unable to find a parking space outside their home.
Ten per cent of motorists also admitted to having a row with parking wardens over the lack of adequate parking provision.
RAC Foundation executive director Edmund King said, "The focus of general-election manifestos has been on congestion, but parking is an even worse problem.
"Every car journey ends with the need to park, and failing to provide enough spaces is like running a train that doesn't stop at any stations."
Motoring body SMMT estimates that there over 30 million cars on the UK roads, with around one million households having at least three cars.
